High winds expected January 12-13, 2024 (Friday and Saturday) with frigid temperatures to follow

Extremely gusty conditions are expected to arrive this weekend with the passage of a cold front, bringing a wintry mix of precipitation and bitterly cold temperatures later this weekend and into next week. With severe wind gusts up to 55 mph in the forecast, there is an elevated likelihood for power outages across the state. Our crews will be ready to respond, but adverse travel conditions can sometimes result in lengthier outage restoration times. With sub-freezing temperatures on the horizon, we encourage customers to prepare now.

Follow these helpful steps to be ready:

Prepare in advance

Visit our Storm Center to learn how to remain safe during all phases of a storm and, with temperatures expected to be well below normal, consider making plans for the elderly and those with special medical needs, should extended outages occur.

Duke Energy customers can also sign-up now for Outage Alerts and know how to report an outage by texting REG to 57801 or going to Outage Alerts to sign-up. If you lose power, text OUT to 57801, report online, through the mobile app, or call 800.343.3525. You can also learn more about the restoration process following a damaging storm.

Duke Energy has programs designed to help customers make smart energy decisions, stay comfortable and save no matter the weather.

Track Energy Usage: We offer several ways to track daily energy use and adjust usage habits to help customers save on their next bill.

§  Monitor Usage on our Website or Mobile App: With a Duke Energy online account, customers can track their energy use on any device through our website or mobile app. They’ll see when their energy use is spiking so they can make small adjustments at home that can help lower their energy bills. Watch this short video to see how it works.

§  Usage Alerts: Customers can sign-up for emails and/or texts halfway through a billing cycle, well before a bill arrives, with their current usage amount and a projection of what their final monthly bill could be.

Flexible Payment Options: We offer several programs and services that can help assist customers with their energy bills.

§  Installment Plans: Customers can use our interest-free Installment Plans to help make monthly payments comfortable for them.

§  Due Date Extensions: We understand customers may need a little extra time occasionally to pay a bill. They can extend their payment due date by one to 10 business days.

§  Budget Billing: Budget Billing lets customers pay one predictable amount every month to better manage their budget. The amount is periodically reviewed and adjusted.

§  Pick Your Due Date: Customers can choose the date they want their Duke Energy bill to be due each month to align with a date that works for them.

Financial Assistance: If someone you know is experiencing a time of uncertainty, we offer programs and resources to help get them back on their feet.

§  Share the Light Fund®: Duke Energy works in partnership with the Indiana Community Action Association to distribute funds to qualifying customers to help pay energy bills, deposits and reconnection/connection charges.

§  Energy Assistance Program: This state-administered program provides assistance to customers who might not otherwise be able to afford to heat their homes.

Energy Assistance Program Application Open from October 2, 2023 to May 20, 2024

Could you use some help with your energy or heating bill? You may qualify to receive federal funding to help pay some of your bills this winter! The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) is a federally funded program to help Indiana residents pay their utility bills and prevent utility shut offs.

Households that earn less than 60% of the state median income (60 SMI) may qualify to receive this benefit. The online application is open from October 2, 2023 to May 20, 2024. Qualified households will be protected by the energy moratorium, which prevents their heat and energy utilities from being shut off in the winter months.

Contact your local service provider or visit to EAP.ihcda.in.gov to learn more.
